Despite disruptions to education over the last year the Nature Friendly Schools project has worked with 90 schools, enabling 16,000 pupils to benefit from learning in nature, training 500 teachers in outdoor learning and supporting pupil’s mental health – and transforming 30 school grounds.

In August, FSC tutor Christina Sinclair mentored two students from London universities for a three-week virtual placement which is able to take place due to the Sheina Marshall Fund.

Many of FSC’s customers who cannot join us for their planned courses have taken the time to express concern for staff and support for FSC. It’s good to know that they plan to be back as soon as they can!

As we all adjust to this new way of life as home workers, home teachers and keeping socially distant FSC support teachers parents and young missing out on opportunities for outdoor learning due to Covid-19.

FSC have worked with Pearson Edexcel to produce some new fieldwork resources for teachers including three short videos and A Guide to Conducting High Quality Fieldwork at GCSE.

Earlier this month FSC colleagues attended and presented at the joint Council for Learning Outside the Classroom (CLOtC) and Outdoor Education Advisers Panel (OEAP) conference.

A new programme of professional learning will help educators in the Tayside region make connections between nature settings, Outdoor Learning approaches, and STEM subjects. FSC Scotland and the John Muir Trust will be jointly delivering practical and online training to promote the idea of ‘STEM by Nature’.

The ‘how-to’ videos which can be found on the ArcGIS Online website have exceeded 10,000 views this month!

Nature Friendly Schools (NFS) project is an exciting new £6.4m government funded research project. FSC is a partner in the project, along with The Wildlife Trusts, Young Minds, Groundwork and The Sensory Trust.

Janine Maddison, Education Development Officer and Robyn Landy, Senior Tutor have received an Award for Excellence in Leading Geography by the Geographical Association.

FSC recently went to the Geographical Association 2019 Conference where we presented 5 workshops and picked up an award at the conference.
