Katherine was awarded the Robert Eisenthal Prize for ‘Excellence on Placement’ from the Biology Department at the University of Bath.

A former FSC Blencathra Higher Education placement student has recently received an award from her University on her placement year. Katherine Webb joined the centre in August 2017 and left in August 2018.

Whilst on placement, Katherine worked with a range of ages, teaching geography, geology, and biology, as well as activity weeks encompassing a wider range of subject areas for younger children.

“If my time with the FSC taught me anything, it was that teaching should go beyond the remit of the curriculum and should be flexible enough to encourage young people to find out what they are interested in and what they are capable of.”

One of Katherine’s main projects was moth trapping and recording information about the number and species of moth that they saw at the centre. They added the information to a organisation-wide initiative to monitor moth species, as their numbers are declining at a shocking rate in the UK.

“It just goes to show what an amazing placement experience I had – thank you for all your support and the feedback on my performance from the centre which has resulted in this!”
