In the books of Enid Blyton the famous five were often found cycling through the Surrey Hills on their way to finding deserted mansions, buried treasure and adventure.

Staff at FSC Juniper Hall have also been cycling through the Surrey Hills to get to work with an aim to keep fit, enjoy the countryside and to reduce the number of car journeys.

Over the past 6 months five members of staff have been cycling to work on average of two days a week saving almost a metric ton of C02 emissions.

The calculation

The average passenger vehicle emits about 411 grams of CO2 per mile.
Additionally a typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. This assumes the average gasoline vehicle on the road today has a fuel economy of about 22.0 miles per gallon and drives around 11,500 miles per year.

So our efforts are currently 1600 miles avoided which equates to 660,000 grams of CO2 or 0.66 metric tons.

We don’t need cars, expensive gym memberships or traffic jams. We just need a bit of healthy competition to keep cycling and of course..lashings of ginger beer.
