FSC Rhyd-y-creuau has recently introduced a hedgehog highway built by H E Placement Student Naveena and Maintenance Officer Tony. The structure was built as an add on to the Wellbeing Walkway to educate visitors about helping hedgehogs.

As we know, the hedgehog population has been declining in the UK. One of the main reasons behind this decline is because our fences and walls are becoming more and more secure, reducing the amount of land available to them. The highway will allow visitors to interact and feel what it is like to be a hedgehog. Pictured below is Sylvie in the human walkway and Naveena as a hedgehog going through the new highway.

If you’re lucky, you could possibly be walking through this highway with an actual hedgehog! Staff hope this will inspire visitors to go home and make a hole in their fence to allow hedgehogs to access gardens safely.

Next to the hedgehog highway, two hedgehog hotels have been added for tired travelling hedgehogs to rests. They already have one occupant!

We have already lost a third of our hedgehogs since the millennium.

Let’s start helping them by taking action today. Join us to spread the awareness on helping hedgehogs! Find out how you can help here: https://www.hedgehogstreet.org/
